Of possible interest: Stevens also made the "Rubber Uglies", based on the Basil Wolverton-designed Ugly Stickers from Topps. That's how I also wound up calling the folks at Stevens Mfg. a few years back. I wonder how often they got bothered by lunatics calling to ask them about dime-store junk from decades ago? They were very nice to me as well, but not able to tell me much. As to the stars of your blog, I had the "chickow" (long gone), and the "catagator", who quickly got two of his paws chewed by our dog Queequeg, but I believe his mangled carcass is still in one of my many tomato boxes full of toy soldiers and the like.
Thanks for the info re: 'Rubber Uglies' Devlin! I will have to do some more research into that toyline, I've never heard of them before.
Thanks for your MUZA memory - so few people actually remember these guys from back then!
And as for your query: "I wonder how often they got bothered by lunatics calling to ask them about dime-store junk from decades ago?" - probably just the two of us!
